Star Pose, or in Sanskrit, Utthita Tadasana, is the perfect posture to counter-balance time spent sitting in a chair.
Star Pose builds strength and body awareness.
Star Pose inspires focus-especially when children are encouraged to stay in the posture for a few breaths.
Star Pose is the root posture of all wide-legged standing postures.
Make sure your children/students have enough room to stretch their arms wide without bumping into objects or each other.
Begin Star Pose by stepping the feet wide.
Children will often try to step their feet too wide making it difficult for them to stand.
Encourage your children/students to step their feet just wide enough to feel sturdy and strong.
Toes pointed forward.
Slight bend in the knee.
Ask the children to grab an imaginary string on the top of their heads and pull themselves up tall.
Next, ask your children/students to imagine laser beams extending from their fingertips-then send those laser beam finger tips out to their sides.
Inhale, Exhale, Repeat.
Remind your children/students to smile and shine bright just like a star.
If you would like to add positive self talk in your Star Pose practice, ask your children/students to say, “I am in Control” while their muscles are engaged in a strong Star pose.
You could also teach Star pose with a science lesson about astronomy.
Remember to make yoga & mindfulness time with your children/students your own. Keep it simple and always practice with the children!
